WHO declares end of global Covid-19 epidemic
Officially, finally, it came to an end. The World Health Organization (WHO) announced on Friday that the emergency declared for Covid-19 more than three years ago is over, a milestone in the intermittent emergence of a pandemic that has killed millions of people around the world and changed everyday life in previously unimaginable conditions.
“With great hope, I declare Covid-19 over as a global health emergency,” said WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
Many countries have already ended their Covid states of emergency and moved away from nearly all public health restrictions put in place to control the virus. The United States will lift its Covid emergency on May 11. The virus will continue to have pandemic status according to the WHO, just like HIV.
