In response to the statements of journalist Alexandre Garcia about the floods in Rio Grande do Sul, the Minister of Justice, Flávio Dino, published the response on Twitter. Garcia had argued that the catastrophe resulted from a government action, stating that “in the PT government were built, contrary to what was recommended by environmental measurements, 3 small dams, which apparently opened the floodgates at the same time. This caused a flood.”
Faced with the allegations, Dino reinforced the government’s stance: “I reiterate that fake news is a crime, it is not a ‘joke’ or a legitimate instrument of political struggle. This crime is even more serious when it refers to a humanitarian crisis, because it can generate panic and increase the suffering of families. The Federal Police is already aware of the facts and will adopt the measures provided for by law”.
According to information from the Planalto, Dino should ask for the arrest of journalist Alexandre Garcia immediately.
The tragedies resulting from the rains have already resulted in serious consequences in the state: according to a balance sheet of the government of Rio Grande do Sul, 46 people have died, another 46 are missing and there are more than 4.7 thousand homeless and 20.4 thousand displaced.
